Jesus: The Word of God

Jesus: The Word of God

. . . and the Word was God. ~John 1:1c

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ~John 1:1

In the gospel penned by John the disciple, he calls Jesus the “Word of God”. This is, perhaps, one of the best descriptions of who Christ is. Jesus as the Word of God, is the express image of God Himself. Jesus was God in human form communicating God’s will in all He said and did; He embodied ultimate and total truth. What may be known of God then can be found in Jesus. He said so Himself when asked by one of His disciples to see the Father.

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ~John 14:8,9

God’s Word teaches us that Jesus is God in the flesh and pre-existent, He was before time began and always with God. The birth of the Messiah was foretold by the prophet Micah around 710 B.C. and in his prophecy he mentioned the Chosen One’s activities had been from the beginning of time and even before that. Jesus is from everlasting to everlasting; He is God eternal!

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. ~Micah 5:2

The prophet Micah is not alone in revealing this message, for the disciple John began his account of the Lord’s life the same way. John told us in the beginning the Word already existed with the God. Last Sunday Pastor gave us a short lesson on the word “Logos” which is Greek for “Word” and is an outward expression of an inner thought. What John wants us to know about Jesus when he calls Him “The Word” is everything we can see, know and understand about God can be found in Jesus. Pastor said the greatest revelation of God is Jesus, the Word made flesh.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. ~John 1:14

Jesus is the Word of God. All of God’s grace and all of His truth are revealed in the person of Christ, specifically His dying for undeserving sinners on the cross. Pastor gave us three points of application from John’s message of Jesus the Word, as the greatest revelation of God:

  1. Apart from Jesus, you cannot know God or find Him.
  2. God is revealed so completely in Jesus that if you reject Him, you reject God.
  3. The closer I imitate Jesus, the more God will be seen in me.

Do you know God? Do you know Jesus? It is only when we know God in the person of His Son Jesus that we have victory over sin and death. It is only when we know Jesus as the Word we become the children of God. If you know Him, then you can look forward to day the Word will return.

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. ~Revelation 19:11-13
